Name Change after Marriage Procedure

The Name Change process consists of three steps, outlined below:

Step 1:

Start the process by obtaining a Marriage Certificate from the registrar’s office, ensuring completion within 40-60 days from the marriage date.

Step 2:

For those wishing to change their name post-marriage, the initial step involves creating an Affidavit for Name Change through a local Notary. This document should include the old name (pre-marriage), the new name (post-marriage), and a clear explanation for the name change. It should also encompass applicant details such as the Husband’s/Father’s name, address, age proof, etc.

Step 3:

Following the completion of the previous step, proceed to the next phase, which involves publishing the name change in a newspaper.

You are required to advertise your Name Change Ads in two local newspapers: one in the regional language Hindi and the other in an English newspaper.

To officially change your name, you must complete a formal name change application and submit it to the pertinent government department, specifically the Government Printing Press – Gazette of India.
