Name Change process in India

In India, changing your name involves a legal process that is governed by the law. Here is a general overview of the name change process:

Obtain Proof of Identity and Address: Before initiating the name change process, ensure you have valid proof of your identity and address. This usually includes documents like your

  • Aadhaar card,
  • passport,
  • voter ID card,
  • Birth Certificate
  • Ration Card

Prepare Affidavit: You need to create an affidavit stating the reason for the name change. This affidavit should be drafted on non-judicial stamp paper of prescribed value and notarized by a notary public or a magistrate.

Place an Advertisement: Publish a notice of your name change in at least two newspapers—one in the local language and another in English. This advertisement should contain details such as your old name, new name, reason for the name change, and any other relevant information.

Apply for Gazette Notification: After publishing the advertisement, you need to apply for a Gazette Notification of your name change. This can be done through the official website of the Government Gazette of India or through the respective State Government Gazette.

Submit Documents: Along with the affidavit and newspaper clippings, you may need to submit additional documents such as proof of identity, address, and the Gazette Notification application form.

Visit Government Offices: Depending on your location, you may need to visit various government offices such as the Registrar of Births and Deaths, Municipality Office, or Sub-Divisional Magistrate's Office to complete the name change process.

Pay Fees: There may be nominal fees associated with the name change process, such as stamp duty for the affidavit, publication charges for the newspaper advertisement, and fees for Gazette Notification.

Wait for Gazette Notification: Once your application for Gazette Notification is processed, your name change will be officially published in the Gazette of India or the State Government Gazette.
